They are afraid that people are trapped

(CNN) – A 21-storey building collapsed on Monday in Lagos, Nigeria, and there are fears that people are trapped under the rubble.

The luxury apartment building, located in the affluent Ikoyi district of the capital, was under construction. It is unclear how many people were inside when it collapsed.

“I thought it was an earthquake when I walked out of my apartment after 3pm. I felt the building moving and knew something was wrong,” Olu Abata, a nearby resident and president of the Bar Association, told CNN from Nigeria.

Apata said the building had been under construction for the past two years and that the developer was on site meeting potential buyers early Monday.

Videos and photos circulated on social media showed people inspecting the site of the collapse, where concrete slabs were piled up in a pile of rubble.

Building collapses are relatively common in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, with a population of about 20 million.

In 2019, the collapse of two different buildings, one housing a school, killed dozens.

An expert told CNN at the time that more than 1,000 buildings were at risk of collapsing in Lagos.

This is an evolving story.
