(CNN) – Home tests must be covered by health insurance for COVID-19 The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Monday, over-the-counter starting Saturday.
“As of January 15, 2022, individuals with private health insurance coverage or a group health plan who purchase an over-the-counter coronavirus diagnostic test licensed or FDA-approved in the United States may have the costs of this Tests are covered by their plan or insurance,” HHS said in a press release.
No doctor’s orders, prescription, or office visits will be required, and tests will not be subject to shared costs or deductibles. Insurers will be required to pay eight tests per covered person per month, either assuming the cost is up front or by reimbursing the insured person. There is no limit to the number of tests that will be covered if ordered or performed by a doctor or other specialist after an office visit.
“This is part of our global strategy to expand access to home tests that are easy to take at no cost,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in the statement.
