(CNN) – UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnsoncelebrated his birthday in June 2020 with a meeting at his official residence, No. 10 Downing Street, while the United Kingdom was in its first prison due to Covid-19, a spokesperson admitted on Monday.

In a statement, the spokesman said: “A group of employees who were working at No. 10 (Downing Street) that day gathered briefly in the Cabinet Room after a meeting wishing the Prime Minister a Merry Christmas. There were less than ten minutes left.”

CNN affiliate ITN TV reported on Monday that two meetings were held to celebrate Boris Johnson’s birthday. One was attended by up to 30 people and was held in the Cabinet Office on the afternoon of June 19.

The other meeting, according to the report, was on the same night, organized at Johnson’s home and attended by family friends. According to ITV News, Johnson’s wife, Carrie, arranged the small gathering in the cabinet room shortly after 2pm on June 19. A source working in Downing Street at the time independently confirmed to CNN that the meeting took place that day and was organized by Johnson’s wife, who led the happy Christmas carol. CNN understands that the meeting was attended largely by what was considered Johnson’s inner circle at the time.

Downing St. denies violating the rules at the evening meeting: “This is absolutely not true. In accordance with the rules at the time, the Prime Minister had a small number of his family outdoors that night,” the spokesperson said. Indoor gatherings were not allowed due to COVID restrictions, and groups of up to six people were only allowed to gather outdoors.
